Reform in Law Enforcement

Reform in Law Enforcement

Daunte Wright George Floyd Sandra Bland Michael Brown Eric Garner Freddie Gray Philando Castile, Travon Martin, Michael Brown, Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice, Elijah McClain. All were killed by police officers, and they were unarmed.

People say, “They should have complied.” If they do comply, there is a more excessive force due to the color of their skin.

Also, some people say our system isn’t broken that isn’t true. When in reality, our system is broken. The recent conviction of former officer Derek Cauvin is a step in the direction of accountability and justice. There needs to be reform in monetary changes, community outreach, and mental training to achieve accountability and justice.

Monetary Changes

When people say defund the police. It gets misinterpreted as removing funding to the police entirely or reallocating funding to resources that matter. But police force will continue to get funding in a different capacity.

Community Outreach

Don’t just post a black square and call it a day. There should be continuous posts highlighting Black Lives Matter Organizations, Black-Owned Businesses, and Figures.

In an episode of Meet the Peetes, the Peete family shines a light on Police Brutality.

Holly Robinson Peete, Mom Dolores said, “she won’t stop posting about Black Lives Matter on social media until there is accountability.

"I’m going to keep posting until somebody’s held accountable,” said Dolores Peete.  - Holly Robinson Peete Mom

Town Halls, Whether it’s weekly or monthly town halls. Police Officers and Town Council Members should have open discussions with the community on police reform.

Mental Health

- Mindful Badge Initiative was started by Lieutenant Richard Goering’s mediation techniques during high alert situations. This initiative was highlighted on Nightly News.

In police training, there should be a course on identifying different physical and mental conditions.

Law/Justice

No- Knock Legislation for Breonna Taylor. Police Officers are to announce themselves before entering any private property. In Breanna Taylor’s case, the police didn’t reveal themselves even when Breoanna yelled, who is it?

Accountability was served after the jury convicted Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin of all charges in George Flloyd’s death that stirred up worldwide protests against racism.

Chauvin will serve 22.5 years in jail.

The three other police officers on the scene during the George Floyd murder are awaiting trial for March 28th. They’re charged with aiding and abetting both second-degree murder and manslaughter.

From the accountability, there is how tv and films address black lives matter.

TV/Film

Whether addressing black lives matter or various cast shows, writers and producers want to have that open dialogue in the show’s script and be a safe space for diversity.

Greys Anatomy character Miranda Bailey and her husband Ben talk about interacting with police officers with their teenage son Tuck.

Station 19 characters Andy Herrera and Vic Hughes respond to a Crisis One call involving an unarmed black teen with police.
