This past week over 100 women from diverse backgrounds were elected into the House of Representatives. Here is a timeline of women breaking the glass ceiling from 2016 to 2018.
2016
Kamala Harris - Second black woman and first Indian American to serve in U.S Senate.
Tammy Duckworth is the first female veteran to serve in the Senate, second Asian American.
Catherine Cortez Masto first Latina woman to serve in the U.S Senate.
Ilhan Omar first Somali American Muslim to serve in Minnesota State Legislature.
Kate Brown ran for governor of Oregon and in 2015 became the first openly LGBTQ politician elected to the governorship.
Hilary Clinton was the first woman presidential candidate to win the popular vote.
2017
Shelia Oliver became the first African American woman to serve as Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey and the second woman to serve.
Danica Roem became the first ever openly transgender woman in Virginia state legislator.
Andrea Jenkins became the first openly transgender woman of color elected to a city council
Vi Lyles became the first African American mayor of Charlotte North Carolina
Joyce Craig became the first elected female mayor of Manchester New Hampshire
